Rays' Brett Phillips: Hero for Game 4

Phillips delivered an RBI single that resulted in the game-winning run in his only plate appearance during the win over the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series on Saturday. The 26-year-old entered as a pinch runner for Ji-Man Choi during the bottom of the eighth inning and remained in the game as a defensive replacement, and he came up to bat with two outs in the ninth with the Rays trailing 7-6 with runners on first and second. Phillips' RBI single to center field was misplayed by Chris Taylor, and the subsequent relay was missed by catcher Will Smith, allowing Randy Arozarena to score the winning run despite falling down halfway to home plate. Phillips is as unlikely a hero as anyone, since he was left off the roster for the ALCS and his last plate appearance before Game 4 came over two weeks ago in the ALDS versus the Yankees, but he came through in the clutch for the Rays on Saturday.

Rays' Brett Phillips: Back on roster for World Series

Phillips was added to the Rays' roster for the World Series on Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Phillips has gotten into four playoff games this year but has come to the plate just twice, going 0-for-2. He was not part of the roster for the ALCS, but with off days returning for the World Series, the Rays will go with one more position player and one fewer reliever.

Rays' Brett Phillips: Removed from ALCS roster

The Rays optioned Phillips (hamstring) to their taxi squad Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Phillips hadn't started in a game for the Rays since he was removed from the Sept. 27 regular-season finale with right hamstring tightness, but he was healthy enough to make four appearances off the bench between Tampa Bay's wild-card round series win over the Blue Jays and divisional-round series win over the Yankees. He was removed from the roster for the Rays' ALCS matchup with the Astros in favor of reliever Jose Alvarado, who will provide the team with another left-handed option out of the bullpen.
