Marlins' Starling Marte: Back in Miami in 2021

The Marlins informed Marte (hand) on Wednesday that they will exercise his $12.5 million team option for 2021, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.Team CEO Derek Jeter told the media earlier this month that he hoped to retain Marte through the upcoming season, so the Marlins' decision to pick up the outfielder's affordable option comes as little surprise. Though he was sidelined for the Marlins' NLDS loss to the Braves after fracturing his left hand, Marte is expected to be back to full strength well in advance of spring training. Between his stops in Arizona and Miami in 2020, the 32-year-old proved he was still a capable bat near the top of the lineup, slashing .281/.340/.430 with six home runs and 10 stolen bases over 61 games.

Marlins' Starling Marte: Won't play in NLDS

Marte (hand) will not be on the Marlins' roster for the NLDS against the Braves, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.Marte broke his hand after getting hit by a pitch in Game 1 of the Wild Card Round against the Cubs. He remained on the roster for Game 2 as a potential pinch runner, but the fracture will keep him from being able to hit in the near future, so he'll be dropped from the roster for the next series. He isn't expected to require surgery, however, so he could have a shot to return for the NLCS should the Marlins advance past Atlanta.

Marlins' Starling Marte: Status for NLDS uncertain

Manager Don Mattingly said Sunday that the Marlins haven't made any determination on the status of Marte (hand) for this week's NLDS matchup with the Braves, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.Marte fractured his left hand in the Marlins' postseason opener against the Cubs on Sept. 30 and sat out the series-clinching win two days later. Despite the severity of his injury, Marte apparently won't require surgery to address the fractured hand, leaving the door open for him to play for the rest of the Marlins' playoff run. When he'll be ready to hit again is more of a question mark, so even if Marte is included on the NLDS roster, he may largely be limited to pinch running and defensive duty.
